OUT ON THE ROAD
I finally got the chance to do driving on the public roads last Tuesday (7 Nov). And it was so fun!
My instructor Mr Lim, who was a senior Chinese man, spoke mostly Mandarin to me throughout the lesson. I was on subject 8, which is about acceleration, deccelaration and engine brake. He said that I should have already had the chance to go out onto the roads by this lesson, but maybe my previous instructor felt I wasn't ready yet. So, he let me warm up a bit first around the circuit.
Given that I had always driven in the circuit for the past 4 lessons, I was accustomed to driving at only 20km/h and below, which is really slow. So this Mr Lim told me to speed up and go faster on those parts of the road that were straight because on straight roads, the only thing we do is accelerate. Something else he said stuck with me: "If you only remain within the circuit and drive, you will never be able to learn how to drive fast when you are in actual road conditions outside."
What he said is very true and is applicable to life too. If we allow ourselves to become comfortable in an enclosed and limited space, there's no way we will ever know what greater things we could experience by stepping out beyond where we normally are. The same goes for our mindset. To be able to do more and handle more responsibilities, we must first expand our thinking and believe that by God's help, we can. It's wonderful how God can bring such simple truths to our attention through a usual, routine driving lesson.
