CATARACT SURGERY

This morning my mum had cataract surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Her vision in the right eye had been blurred for quite some time (clouding of the eye's natural lens) and the eye doctor who first examined her had advised her to go for surgery to remove the cataract. It wasn't easy for my mum to make this decision because anyone in her shoes would be apprehensive to a certain extent about the outcome and the risks involved. Even though cataract surgery is considered very safe here in Singapore with the use of latest techniques, my mum was still worried and did not book an appointment for it. After some time, however, she got a second opinion from another doctor who urged her to quickly go for it. So 2 weeks ago, she went for another eye check-up and the doctor told her that the cataract had fully matured in her right eye and had to be removed. So a date for surgery was fixed, which is today.

I would say my mum is very brave to go ahead with surgery. She did not want my dad, my brother or me to worry about her even though she felt nervous about it. At the same time, she was reassured to know that there were many people praying for her -- her cell group mates, Sis Klessis and the rest of N252 members, Bro Victor & Sis Yvonne and their members, and many others as well.

My brother took leave today to fetch her to the hospital, and I took leave for this purpose too, to accompany her. My dad starts work only in the afternoon and so 3 of us went with her to TTSH this morning.

Here is my mum waiting for her turn for surgery.

After about 1/2 hour of waiting, my mum was wheeled in. The nurse told us that it would take about another 1 and a half hours' time. From what I found out on the net, majority of cataract surgeries are performed by phacoemulsification, where the surgeon makes a small incision of 1.5 to 3.0mm on the cornea. The purpose is to soften the cataract lens, remove it and replace it with an artificial lens implant.

Before and during the surgery, I was praying for my mum and I believe that God will protect her and anoint the surgeon and nurses to do a good job. About close to 2 hours after my mum went in, my brother received a call from the nurse to say that mum has been wheeled out and was resting in one of the wards. Praise God and thank God for a smooth procedure, which my mum said was painless after receiving anaesthesia. It was a day surgery and my mum was conscious throughout. We could see that she was very anxious before she went in but after that, she was relieved and was feeling well. Below is the picture of her resting at the ward (she asked me to take pic of her and said I could blog this, so I did) :) Posted by Picasa

She was discharged 1 hour after surgery, and if she doesn't experience any headaches, nausea or vomiting within the next 24 hours after discharge it means she is taking it well. My brother fetched us home and we bought lunch back to eat. Tomorrow, me and my dad will be accompanying her back to TTSH at 8am for a follow-up on her eye condition. She's given 28 days MC to recuperate at home and will have to apply eye drops 3-hourly every day for the next 1 month.

I'm glad and thankful to God that she is alright, and my family and I really appreciate all who have been (and still are) showing care & concern for my mum through your phone calls, sms-es, your visits, & your prayers especially. Thank you so much to all of you :)
