JEWEL IN THE PALACE

Recently, I realised that my parents have caught on to the 70-episode Korean drama serial Jewel In The Palace, otherwise known as Da Chang Jin. Most people would probably have already known about this serial or even watched it a couple of times on SCV by now. For me, however, I am a total blur to Da Chang Jin. I remember an ex-colleague of mine mentioning it to me last year but I wasn’t even aware then that such a serial existed. The only knowledge and perception I had of Da Chang Jing after hearing from my colleague was that it is a super-long Korean period drama serial that revolved around the life of a girl in the royal palace.

Currently being broadcasted at 10pm for an hour every night from Mondays to Fridays, my parents will get ready to watch the serial on Channel U right after the 9pm Chinese drama serial on Channel 8. I never knew or thought that such a drama serial would appeal to them, but somehow, their eyes would stay glued to the TV set for that particular hour. My mother may not follow through every episode completely, but what amazes me is that my father is the one who is so interested in the drama plot that he would make the time to watch it except on weekday nights when he isn’t at home. Now, my parents are no longer following through with Channel U but are speeding up way ahead, watching the Da Chang Jin VCD that their church friend lent them!

My father makes it a point to watch one disc (containing 1 and a half episodes) everyday. Even though there aren’t any English subtitles for the VCD, he enjoys the serial by watching it in Mandarin as he does have a fair command of the language. And because of my parents’ attraction to Da Chang Jin, I have now begun to follow the storyline as well and have grown to like the serial. Yet another reason why I like the show is because the lead actress Lee Young Ae who acted as the girl Chang Jin displayed such excellent acting skills and is so sweet and pretty.

I am now halfway into the serial but did not pick up the story from the beginning episodes. I merely watched from where I began catching a glimpse of the show and just pieced together whatever bits of info I could obtain to get the whole big picture. But I have actually found out about the serial’s theme, content and ending already because while I was on the net last week, out of curiosity I went surfing for reviews of Da Chang Jin and read the synopsis.

Set in the Joseon Dynasty where patriarchy dominates, it is a Korean historical drama based on a real-life woman who started out as a palace maid but fought against all odds to eventually become the first female personal physician of the King. Apart from the many twists and turns in the plot, I am drawn to the romantic and beautiful love story between Chang Jin and Min Zheng Hao, a royal guard-cum-military man.

Though I already know the ending, I am still interested in following through with the VCD because I just do not wish to miss out on how the story unfolds. My parents have just started to watch the next episode in the living room now, so I am gonna join them le. A must-see! :)
